21 Most Iconic Moments in Pop Culture from 2021

2021, what can I say? You were like the 2020’s slightly cooler sibling. You had fewer lockdowns, and better a summer than before, concerts came back and shows started to slowly bring back live audiences. However, the pandemic continued its stage performance and had costume changes while at.

And though we are not entirely out of the woods yet, 2021 gave us hope to be returning to normal – and some entertaining moments as well. Here are the 21 Most Iconic Moments of 2021.

Prince Harry and Megan Markle Step Down from the Royal Family

After multiple challenging years in the spotlight, Prince Harry & Megan Markle decided to step back from their royal duties and build an independent life for themselves that did not revolve around The Firm. It was a move that no one saw coming – I don’t think the Queen did too. Later that year, the couple had an interview with Oprah, telling the world their story, which gifted us the iconic line “Were you silent, or were you silenced?”

Taylor Swift gave us a 10-minute version of All too Well

With the release of her latest album Red (Taylor’s Version), Swift re-recorded all her original songs from 2012 giving her fans a fuller and more mature sound to the well-loved songs. In addition to her release, Swift also wrote and directed a short film inspired by the song All too Well which featured actors Dylan O’Brian and Sadie Sink. The song is rumoured to be about actor Jake Gyllenhaal, the two dated back in 2010, and their breakup left Taylor completely heartbroken.

Keeping Up with the Kardashians comes to an end

After 20 seasons Keeping Up with the Kardashians have said their goodbyes. KUWTK aired their final seasons in March and left many of us wondering how we were going to keep up with this wild family, truly an end of an era.

And then Kim and Kayne filed for divorce…

KUWTK came to an end, and so did Kimye. But that did not stop Kim from finding love, soon came the biggest plot twist of the year….

Kim and Pete Davidson started dating

pete davidson & kim kardashian

The two allegedly started dating back in October of 2021, since then the pair have spent a lot of time together.

Adele released her first album in five years

Divorce babe, the album is all about divorce. Adele dropped is a new album, and she did not disappoint.

Britney got her freedom

After years and years of public protest from her fans, and several documentaries, Britney was released from her 14-year long conservatorship in November, and we couldn’t have been happier!

HBO hosts the long-awaited Friends Reunion

Fans have been waiting for this forever, and it was everything they could hope for and more. Seeing the whole cast back together was so nostalgic.

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck got back together, again

After nearly 20 years apart, Bennifer has reunited giving us a much-needed dose of nostalgia.

ASAP Rocky & Rihanna started dating, finally

Some might say that these two are the same people, but different genders. The most fashionable couple started their romance in the snowy scenes of December 2020, but they did not make it public until April of 2021, with the paparazzi taking pictures of their dinner date in LA. Since then, the two have been inseparable.

Squid Games, that’s it; that’s the header

If you haven’t watched the Netflix original Squid Games stop reading this, and go watch, like right now.

This show had us all in a chokehold, I don’t know what we would have done if the episodes came out weekly. Since its debut, the show became the most-watched show in Netflix history.

Will & Jada, please stop

From the infamous “entanglement”, to the TMI of their relationship, the once idolized couple Will Smith and Jada Picket-Smith, have now become the most annoying couple of 2021. A Change.org petition was set up pleading that these two stop being interviewed, and so far it has over 23,000 signatures. With Red Table Talk, to Will Smith’s memoir Will, these two have countless memes, and headlines about them.

Insecure aired its final season

I might cry about this one, but here we go…

After 5 amazing seasons Insecure came to a sad end. This show has opened so many doors for Black women in the film industry. It’s hard to see them go, but I enjoyed the ride.

Virgil Abloh

In late November of 2021, the news of the fashion innovator Virgil Abloh died due to cancer, and it shocked the fashion industry. His legacy, which included boundary-pushing collaborations, new and artistic art direction for Louis Vuitton, and many more.

Zoë Kravtiz and Channing Tatum

I don’t care for celebrity couples that often, but this is one couple I am a fan of. These two are a part of a long legacy of beautiful women who are with men who don’t quite reach their level of hotness (examples include: Beyonce and Jay-Z, Megan Foxx & MGK, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas). This couple is a Brooklyn hipster dream couple, looking glamorously unglamorous.

Bowen Yang

If you don’t know who Bowen Yang is, once again, stop what you’re doing and go watch the latest season of SNL.

I have been watching SNL since I was 8, and I can honestly say that Yang is a once-in-a-generation talent, though he is new to SNL, he is one name that you should watch out for in 2022.

NFT???

Please don’t ask me what NFTs are, I do not know, but I have heard this year too many times to count. To my understanding, it’s like owning an art collection, but in the metaverse? I also don’t know what a metaverse is.

The end of Daft Punk

After 28 years of success, the French Electronica duo Daft Punk broke up. The duo released a video making it clear to fans that the band is done, and they left in their infamous mysterious style.

Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello (finally) breakup

After dating for more than two years, Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello have called it quits in December of 2021. The two stated that the cause of their breakups was their hectic schedules. During their relationship, they had an intense relationship and spent months together, moments that they showed on Instagram, all the time.

Ellen DeGeneres became the villain in her own story

Her iconic motto “be kind”, didn’t quite age well for the daytime show host. Crew members of the show revealed that they have been treated not-so-kind during the pandemic. This resulted in Ellen being cancelled by the media, and now her shows are hosted by guest hosts.

MJ Rodriguez being nominated for a Golden Globe for Pose

It’s about damn time that MJ ‘Michaela Jae’ Rodriguez got the flowers she deserved for her amazing performance in the show Pose. And just earlier this month, Rodriguez won that very Golden Globe, making her the first Black Trans Woman to win a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a TV.

And Just Like That

Did we need to see what the women of Sex and the City were up to nowadays? No. Are we still going to watch it anyway? Yes. Sex in the City had a huge cultural impact, and it still does, unfortunately, it had aged badly, but with the show’s spin-off, they fixed all of their wrongdoings.

Let’s hope that 2022 has more iconic moments that shape the culture.
